Lake McCarrons is an invaluable resource to the community in southeast Roseville. People come together on the lake to enjoy swimming, kayaking, water skiing, fishing and more — so water quality and safety is essential to everyone. The discovery of zebra mussels in 2019 and issues with E. coli in recent years have shown that a coordinated effort is needed to prevent and control the further spread of aquatic invasive species and work with government officials on issues that impact the health and quality of the lake.
It seems that lakeshore communities with active, strong lake associations have been able to marshal more resources from county and state agencies. The volunteers who started McCarrons Lakefront Alliance believe it’s time to be more proactive in seeking out these resources, advocating for the lake, educating the public and communicating information from public entities to the community and stakeholders. While we are too late to prevent zebra mussels, it’s not too late to work on ways to keep them under control and prevent the introduction of other invasive species to Lake McCarrons.
